9 Things Everyone Says to a Live Painter (And What I'm Really Thinking)

One of my favorite parts of being a live painter isn't just creating art, it's getting to interact with so many wonderful people. Whether I'm painting at a wedding, private event, or special celebration, guests are naturally curious. They stop by, ask questions, cheer me on, and sometimes leave me laughing.

After countless events, I've noticed there are a few comments I hear almost every single time. If you've ever wondered what it's looks like from the artist's side of the easel, here's a little peek behind the scenes.

  1. "This is the coolest thing I've ever seen at a wedding (or event, fundraiser, etc.)!"

Hearing this reminds me why I love what I do. Live painting isn't just about creating a product. It's about entertainment and preserving a moment that can be displayed and treasured for years after the celebration ends.

  1. "Wow, you're so talented!"

This one never gets old. First of all, I always love hearing this compliment, but what many people don't see are the years of practice, the late nights, the paintings that didn't turn out, and the constant learning that happens long before an event. Talent may spark the journey, but practice keeps it going.

  1. "I can't even draw a stick figure."

This might be the most common comment of them all. I always laugh because I truly believe creativity looks different for everyone. Some people paint, others cook incredible meals, build businesses, write stories, or make people laugh. Painting is just my way of expressing creativity.

  1. "Can you add me in there?"

This question is always asked with a grin and I love the enthusiasm. Sometimes I will add guests into my paintings and sometimes a scene like a wedding is focused on the couple only. I always like to be playful with guests the guests though..."ya never know, come back later and see!" It's all part of the fun and makes everything a little more memorable.

  1. "How long does something like this take?"

Guests are often astonished at how fast a painting progresses on the day of an event. My goal is to send my clients home with their painting by the end of the event and paintings finished on-site usually take 6 to 8 hours on-site. If I don't finish during the event, I will take the painting back to be completed in the studio!

  1. "Can I watch?"

Absolutely! I actually enjoy when people stop by throughout the evening to see the painting evolve. Watching a blank canvas slowly become a finished work is part of the magic, and I'm always happy to share that experience.

  1. "Can I take a picture?"

Please do! I love seeing guests share the creative process. It's amazing knowing that a painting can become part of someone's memory before it's even finished.

  1. "Wait, I can add to the painting?"

Yes! I'll teach you how to add your own brushstrokes to the canvas so you can leave a lasting mark on the day in a whole new way. My clients also love knowing that you had the opportunity to participate in the process beyond just watching the painting come to life.

  1. "I can't wait to see the finished painting!"

Me neither. Every event tells a different story, and every painting becomes a keepsake that captures not only how the day looked, but how it felt.

Final Thoughts

One of the best things about being a live painter isn't just working on the painting itself; it's the conversations I get to have. The curiosity, excitement, encouragement, and laughter from guests make every event unique. So, if you ever see a live painter at an event, don't be shy. Come say hello, ask questions, and watch the painting come to life. Chances are, you'll leave with a new appreciation for the process and feel more connected to the event you're attending.
